CAMBRIDGE GCE ‘O’ LEVEL (1-Year Jan  – Dec Preparatory Course)

Objectives :

The GCE ‘O’ Level is an entry requirement to all polytechnics and the GCE ‘A’ Level and also to most university foundation programmes in Australia, USA, UK, New Zealand and Canada.

Who is Eligible?

This course is meant for international students or local students who intend to take the ‘O’ level examination as a private candidate.

Entry Requirement :

  • Must have completed Grade 9 in home country

  • Must be at least 15 years of age as on 1st Jan of the examination year

Progression :

  • Good grades in at least 5 subjects to enter into local Polytechnics. Polytechnic graduates with good grades will have the opportunity to pursue tertiary education in local universities, with advanced standing into 2nd year.
  • Good grades in 6 subjects to enter a Junior College or centralized institute in Singapore leading to the GCE ‘A’ Level examination for admission to universities in Singapore and overseas.
  • Good grades in at least 5 subjects for entry to most university foundation programmes in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK and USA
  • Average grades for entry to either certificates programmes offered by ITE, NCC, ITE or UCLES.

SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT PREPARATORY COURSE 

Objectives:

Courses are offered for levels ranging from Primary One to Secondary Three levels.  All subjects offered are in accordance with the syllabus set out by the Ministry of Education. At TeleLingua, we adopt an examination-oriented approach to study, emphasising style, examination techniques and working through many questions covering all aspects of examination syllabus in order to prepare our students sufficiently to pass the entrance examination.

Who is Eligible?

This course is specially designed for foreign students aged 6 to 16, who intend to prepare themselves before they sit for the Entrance Examinations for study in a Singapore Government, Government-Aided or Independent Schools at primary or secondary levels in the following year. 

Entry Requirement:

Foreign students will be considered for admission to a level at a primary/secondary school subject to:

  • Documentary proof that he/she has completed the previous level, and

  • Subject to the age criteria for the level of admission

Similarly, a foreign student would not be allowed to repeat a level if, by repeating that level, he/she would now be above age for that level.

ENGLISH COURSE FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS

Objectives:

Our interactive and stimulating style of teaching ensures that the students can successfully and confidently use English as a means of communication for their personal or professional development.

Who is Eligible?

This course caters to all foreign students who have little or no exposure to the English Language. There is no age restriction on students enrolling for the course.

Entry Requirement:

No formal qualification required. Students will sit for an English Placement Test to determine the level at which they should begin the course.

Course Synopsis

There are altogether 5 levels.  Each level integrates listening, speaking, reading and writing skills for effective communication. 

 

Elementary

Describing family relationships, countries and nationalities. Use of Comparative Adjectives and Adverbs of Frequency. Articles, Conjunctions, Plurals, Simple Past, Present Continuous, Future and Present Perfect Tenses. Questions forms.   

 

Pre-Intermediate

Describing numbers, prices, clothes, food and places. Making polite requests. Use of relative clauses. Past Perfect Tense. Passive Voice, First and Second Conditionals. Synonyms and Antonyms. Writing stories and simple letters. Students will have a vocabulary of about 2,200 words and able to read simple stories and write short compositions.  

 

Intermediate

Present Perfect Continuous Tense, Conditionals, Prepositional phrases, Listening tasks for eliciting specific information and transferring information. Reading skills for newspaper, skimming, scanning, inferring and poetry appreciation. Role-play and discussion. Writing skills for note taking, cohesive devices in summarizing, formal and informal letters. Students will have a vocabulary of about 3,500 words and be able to write descriptions, narratives, instructions, processes and formal letters and hold fluent discussions in English.

 

Upper-Intermediate

Gerunds, Future, Future Continuous, Future Perfect Tenses, Tag Questions. Reported Speech. Inference in reading. Topic sentences, discourse markers. Intensive listening tasks. Students will have a vocabulary of about 5,000 words and be able to exploit his/her higher literacy level for a variety of communicative purpose academic as well as social. Students will be able to write the following expository, narratives and descriptive writing, comparisons, processes, letters and reports.

 

Advanced

Varieties of English, limericks, idioms, euphemisms, relative clauses, discussion on a wide range of topics, proof-reading, consolidating language foundation for the next course (TOEFL/IELTS)

External Examination

Upon completion of various levels of the course, students may enroll for the Cambridge English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) examinations.  Students who have completed the course up to Advanced level will be able to enroll for the IELTS or TOEFL course.

January, April, July, October.   Applications can be made at any time during the year.  Students may join a class on any Monday.

MANDARIN COURSE FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS

Objectives:

Our interactive and stimulating style of teaching ensures that the students can successfully and confidently use Mandarin as a means of communication for their personal or professional development.

Who is Eligible?

This course caters to all foreign students who have little or no exposure to the Chinese Language. There is no age restriction on students enrolling for the course.

Entry Requirement:

No formal qualification required. Students will sit for a Chinese Placement Test to determine the level at which they should begin the course.

 

Course Synopsis

There are altogether 4 levels. English is used for lessons at the lower levels.  There will be intensive practice of grammar, vocabulary, phrases learnt through examples, drill patterns (including Hanyu Pinyin pronunciation), dialogues, substitution exercises, and role play to enable our students to build up their fluency skills and confidence. 

Elementary Level Course

The Elementary Level is meant for students who have little or no exposure to Mandarin. The content includes greetings, kinship terms, asking names/surnames/nationalities, expressing past tense, question tag, expressing intention, numerals, vocabulary on traveling and distance, asking permission, making suggestions, use of classifiers, expressing possession, terms for seasons, dates and festivals.  Texts are written with Pinyin annotations.  Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to conduct simple everyday conversation. 

Lower Intermediate Level Course

At the Lower Intermediate Level, students will acquire a wider vocabulary in a variety of practical situations like traveling, shopping, food, and have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture.  The content includes expressions for time and telephone conversation, making comparisons, passive voice, expressing supposition, conditional, causality, reservation, immediacy, terms for illness and parts of the body.  Learning to write Chinese characters is optional. 

Intermediate and Advanced Levels Courses

Upper Intermediate and Advanced Levels are literary courses that serve not only to enrich the students with idiomatic expressions, but more importantly, to train them in reading and writing the Chinese characters for practical usage so that they can interact freely with Chinese communities all over the world.  Students who are ambitious and wish to proceed to the Upper Intermediate and Advanced Level will learn to write 1,500 Chinese characters at each level.  They will be able to read simple texts from books, magazines and newspapers.
